KPHA needs
to feature members in upcoming Newsletters

At the last Board meeting it was discussed to feature members
in our newsletters as other associations do. So, for the next
one, we’d like to feature those that begin with the last
names of Y and Z. Starting at the back of the alphabet is rarely
done—I know as I have one of those last letters! In KPHA
those with the last name starting with Z and Y include Claire
Ziegler, Kathy, Zach, Hung-Wen Yeh, Sara Yost, and Jane Yates.
So please send me your articles and pictures (I am sending you
an email in addition to putting it in the Newsletter!!)
To give you an idea of what to say in your article about yourself,
here are a couple of people featured in the KACE (Kansas Adult
Care Executives) Journal. As you can see, one wrote an article
in the first person, and one in the second person:
Example 1:
KACE MEMBER – IN FOCUS Maggie Rader (Picture was
included)
I began my career with the senior living industry through the
back door, so to speak. Most of my professional background was
in marketing hospital programs and creating a marketing/physician
recruitment department for a small, rural hospital in Atchison,
KS. When we moved back to Topeka, I joined Brewster Place Retirement
Community in 1995 to develop their sales and marketing department.
I had no idea CCRCs existed. My frame of reference with long-term
care was nursing home based, seeing my elderly aunts and grandmothers
cared for in a very medical model, typical for the 1970s. Thank
goodness, times have changed since then.
I’ve been fortunate to work in great facilities starting
with a CCRC, progressing to a lovely community with only independent
and assisted living components and then to a small, rural care
center. Currently, I’m the Executive Director for Ottawa
Retirement Village and excited to be back in a CCRC structure.
The day before I was to start my job with ORV, USA Today identified
us as one of two focus facilities in Kansas receiving surveys
every six months. Non-deterred, we’ve worked hard this year
ending the focus status by passing two consecutive surveys each
under six deficencies no higher than “E”.
I currently serve on the KACE Tanner-Foster Board of Directors,
and I have enjoyed participating on the AIT Committee. My husband,
Steve and I downsized when we moved last year, and I’m still
trying to get accustomed to a smaller house. I can identify with
our residents who have done the same. The upside is that we’re
on two acres, and I have a huge garden. My hobbies include gardening,
of course, and canning the fruits of our labor. We have two puppies,
Snoop Dog and Curley, who come to work with me each day. They
provide the residents with some comic relief and are fun to watch
playing in the enclosed courtyard.
Example 2:
KACE BOARD MEMBER – IN FOCUS Chris Rea (Picture
was included)
Chris began his health care career in the field of emergency
medicine as a Mobile Intensive Care Technician (Paramedic) for
Sedgwick County EMS. In conjunction with his career in EMS, Chris
was hired as a faculty member for Wichita State University’s
Allied Health Program, in which he was involved in lecturing and
coordinating field internships for both E.M.T. and the M.I.C.T.
programs. Chris remains on staff at WSU consulting with various
department heads, coordinating, and teaching Basic Life Support
classes. After four years of service with Sedgwick Co. EMS, he
expanded his skills and desire for patient care by becoming a
Flight Paramedic with Eagle Med, flying both in rotor and fixed
wing aircraft.
In 2001, Chris entered the field of long-term care as an Administrator
of a 54-bed Skilled Nursing Facility. In the years following,
Chris became Manager of Facility Operations for Foundation Properties
and oversees the operations of nine communities, which range in
services from Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s Care, and skilled
Rehab Services. During that time, he has led efforts of renovating
some of the properties, as well as oversight on a major addition
to one of their assisted living communities, Marquis Place in
Elkhorn, NE. In November 2007, Chris also assumed the role of
Administrator at Valley View Senior Life in Junction City, Kansas.
Chris currently lives in Manhattan, KS with his wife Leslie,
of five years and two year old daughter Riley. Chris holds a B.S.
Degree in Health Care Administration.
