September is National
Preparedness Month

State and federal emergency management officials
are urging Kansans to “Get a Kit. Make a Plan. Be Informed.
Get Involved.” The Kansas Division of Emergency Management
(KDEM) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be
sharing that message at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Sept.
5-14. KDEM is sponsoring “Kansas Preparedness Day”
on Sept. 8 with exhibits in a large tent in the parking lot of
the fair’s administration building. FEMA will have a booth
under the grandstand throughout the fair’s nine-day run.
As Kansans, we know all too well that disaster can take many forms.
All citizens need to be prepared. As we, hopefully put tornado
season behind us, it’s not too early to begin planning for
winter.
The National Preparedness Month campaign is
sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a huge
coalition of public and private sector organizations. The campaign
encourages citizens to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies
in their homes, businesses and communities. The campaign’s
preparedness steps include important details to help all Americans:
- Create an emergency supply kit;
- Make a family emergency plan;
- Be informed; and
- Get involved. FEMA offers a comprehensive selection of free
publications that provide simple and effective steps which individuals,
homeowners, and businesses can take to follow National Preparedness
Month recommendations.
Several websites are dedicated to preparedness.
KDEM maintains http://www.ksready.gov/,
which is geared specifically to Kansans; FEMA offers http://www.fema.gov/plan/index.shtm;
and http://www.ready.gov/
is another comprehensive guide to planning ahead for emergencies.
Information on becoming a member of the National Preparedness
Month coalition is also available at the latter site. |

Step Up
For Kids Day on September 16, 2008 on the Capitol Steps in Topeka,
KS.
This
special day, conceived of by the Every Child Matters Education
Fund, seeks to bring child-friendly organizations and individuals
together in every state capital to advocate on behalf of children
and call upon presidential candidates to address the needs of
children and discuss their plans for meeting those needs. The
state events will take place on the steps of state capitals and
loosely mirror a national event in Washington, DC.
Among the desired outcomes:
- Raising the awareness of the needs of children and families
in the US.
- Getting the candidates (federal, state, and local) to place
issues of kids and families on their platforms and discuss how
they plan to address those needs if they are elected, specifically
during the first debate between nominees that will take place
on September 26 in Oxford, MS and will focus on domestic issues.
- Getting members of the media to address these issues and
pose these questions when they’re interviewing and/or
writing about candidates.
- Making America’s children a national political priority.
- Closing the investment gap that is growing ever larger when
it comes to America’s children.
- Getting non-voters to register and everyone to vote with
kids’ well-being in mind.
