APHA Region VII 2016 Annual Meeting

APHA President Camara Jones gives her keynote on Achieving Health EquityThree KPHA members attended the 2016 Region VII Affiliate meeting on April 27-28 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health in Omaha, Nebraska. The theme this year was Public Health: Big Challenges, Big Opportunities. Public health professionals and students traveled from across Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas (MINK) to participate.

The first session was given by Mona Sarfaty from George Mason University on climate change. This was followed up by a clean power panel presentation with speakers from all four states. The representative from Kansas was Gary Mason from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Before the reception at the end of the first day, the keynote was delivered by Camara Phyllis Jones, MD, MPH, PhD, President of the American Public Health Association.

The following day saw a Public Health Law presentation by Colleen Svoboda, MPH, and Darrell Klein, JD. Two panels followed on Public Health Accreditation and Medicaid Expansion. The Kansas panel member for accreditation was Shirley Orr, a Public Health Consultant, and the panel member for Medicaid expansion was Cindy Samuelson from the Kansas Hospital Association.

KPHA is excited to have Dr. Jones as a keynote speaker at the 2016 KPHA Fall Conference this coming September.
